Microsoft explains absence of AMD chips in Surface lineup
Microsoft has provided clarification regarding the absence of AMD processors in its Surface lineup. While the company previously offered AMD configurations in the Surface Laptop 3 and Surface Laptop 4, the partnership for PC hardware ended with the release of the Surface Laptop 5 in 2021.
Brett Ostrum, Corporate Vice President of the Surface division, stated that while Microsoft values its collaboration with AMD, the company must be highly selective with components due to the limited size of the Surface product catalog. The decision to exclude certain platforms is a matter of managing a streamlined hardware offering.
As of the 2026 catalog, Microsoft is focusing on Intel and Qualcomm processors, with plans to integrate NVIDIA solutions. Despite the absence in the Surface PC line, Microsoft maintains a close relationship with AMD in other sectors, specifically utilizing AMD chips for its Xbox consoles.
