Microsoft Extends Windows 10 Security Updates to 2027 and Improves Windows 11 Built‑in Apps
Microsoft has quietly extended its free Extended Security Updates (ESU) program for Windows 10 consumer devices by a full year, moving the cutoff to October 12, 2027. Users already enrolled will receive automatic coverage, while new enrollments can be made by redeeming Microsoft Rewards points, paying a $30 fee, or signing in with a Microsoft account (free for devices in the European Economic Area). The extension does not cover business PCs joined to Active Directory, except for devices registered through Microsoft Entra, while corporate ESU tracks continue through 2028.
In parallel, Microsoft released a preview update for Windows 11 that refines eight pre‑installed apps—Calculator, Camera, Clock, Media Player, Notepad, Paint, Photos, and Sound Recorder. The update adds more accurate calculator functions, zoom controls and AI watermarks in the Camera and Photos apps, improved Bluetooth microphone handling in Sound Recorder, and other usability fixes. The preview is available to members of the Windows Insider Program.
