Microsoft extends Windows 10 security updates to 2027 as Windows 11 launches

Microsoft has officially introduced Windows 11, positioning it as a redesigned operating system rather than a simple update to Windows 10. The new version requires newer hardware, including 64‑bit processors, TPM 2.0, and UEFI firmware, which excludes many PCs built before 2018. Windows 11 features a refreshed visual design with centered taskbar, rounded corners, improved window‑snapping, integrated widgets, a revamped Microsoft Store, and enhancements for gaming such as Auto HDR and DirectStorage.

In a separate move, Microsoft quietly extended the free security‑update period for Windows 10 Home users in the European Economic Area until 12 October 2027. Users can activate the extended support through the Windows 10 Settings app with a Microsoft account; those without an account may purchase a one‑time extension for around €30. Enterprise customers continue to pay annual fees that rise each year. The extension relieves pressure on private users to upgrade to Windows 11 while maintaining protection against security vulnerabilities.
