Microsoft extends Windows 10 security updates to October 2027

Microsoft has quietly extended the Extended Security Updates (ESU) programme for Windows 10 by one year. The new deadline for both private and business users is now October 12 2027 (some sources cite October 14 2027). The support extension applies to systems already enrolled in ESU and to new enrolments without any additional action required.

Individual users can obtain a free year of updates by redeeming 1,000 Microsoft Rewards points or by linking a OneDrive backup, which provides up to 5 GB of free cloud storage. A paid option is also available at roughly $30 (≈£22) for a year, with business fees starting around $45 per device and doubling each subsequent year for up to three years. Over one‑quarter of European desktops still run Windows 10, and roughly 26 % of global users rely on the OS, making the extension a significant measure to protect a large remaining base.

Microsoft’s statement reads: “Windows 10 support has ended. You can enroll in ESU any time until the programme ends on October 12, 2027. If you’re already enrolled, your coverage will automatically continue through that date—no action needed.” The move aims to give users additional time to transition to Windows 11 while maintaining essential security protection.
