Microsoft extends Windows 10 support to 2027

Microsoft moved the official end‑of‑support date for Windows 10 from October 2025 to October 2027 by extending the Extended Security Updates (ESU) program for consumers at no extra charge. The change was reflected on Microsoft’s support site without a major public announcement.

The extension is relevant for an estimated 240 million PCs that do not meet Windows 11 hardware requirements and for roughly 28 % of all Windows PCs worldwide that still run Windows 10. While critical security patches will continue to be released, users are advised to keep the system fully updated, run active antivirus software, use standard user accounts for daily tasks, and avoid sensitive online activities unless they migrate to a newer OS such as Windows 11 or Linux.

The longer support window also impacts cost considerations. Microsoft 365 remains a subscription‑based expense, whereas a one‑time purchase of Office 2024 Pro Plus (available for around €15.5) provides Office updates through 2029 at a lower total cost. Analysts note that the additional year gives users more time to plan a migration without pressure.
