Microsoft fixes Windows 11 mouse settings reset bug

Microsoft has released a cumulative update to resolve a bug in Windows 11 that caused mouse personalization settings to reset. The issue was originally introduced via the KB5120998 August 2026 preview update.

According to Microsoft, the bug affected non-English Windows installations, where specific code components caused settings to fail to load, reverting them to default values. Users reported that even uninstalling the problematic update did not restore their custom cursor and animation settings. The issue is now resolved in the KB5124008 September 2026 cumulative update.

Separately, documentation for Windows 11 Insider builds suggests Microsoft may be testing a redesigned mouse cursor. While no official announcement has been made, screenshots from the Microsoft Learn portal indicate a new pointer design is being evaluated for the operating system.
