Microsoft implements new AI safety framework for users

Microsoft has officially implemented its ‘Safe Engagement Framework’ to address safety and privacy concerns as artificial intelligence becomes more integrated into daily life, particularly for younger users.

The framework is built on three pillars: safety by design, age-appropriate experiences, and education. Under the ‘safety by design’ principle, services prioritize user safety through default settings. For instance, Microsoft is reducing anonymous usage by requiring sign-ins for AI assistants like Copilot, which enables systemic age verification and parental controls.

To provide age-appropriate experiences, the company is implementing several measures: restricting access to Copilot and certain services for users under 13, strengthening content filtering layers in Bing searches to reduce exposure to harmful material, and providing new developer tools like the Windows Age API to help third-party applications implement age verification and safety policies.
