Microsoft integrates Azure Linux into Windows 11

Microsoft has officially introduced Azure Linux 4.0 to the Windows 11 ecosystem via the Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL). Originally developed as an internal solution known as CBL-Mariner to support Microsoft's cloud infrastructure and Kubernetes clusters, this distribution allows developers to work in a local environment that is identical to their production cloud environments.

Azure Linux is a minimalist, command-line-focused system utilizing RPM packages and the Fedora ecosystem. It lacks a traditional graphical user interface to reduce the attack surface, lower memory consumption, and improve startup speeds. Security features include SELinux enabled by default and professional-grade cryptographic modules.

Separately, Microsoft is addressing the slow pace of Windows 11 modernization. Marcus Ash, Head of Design and Research for Windows and Devices, stated that the delay in replacing legacy components like the Control Panel is due to the need to maintain software and driver compatibility. Engineers must build new frameworks, such as WinUI 3, to ensure that modern interfaces do not sacrifice the performance or functionality required by enterprise users.
