Microsoft introduces natural language app building in Copilot

Microsoft has introduced natural language app-building capabilities within Copilot Cowork and Copilot Studio. This feature allows users to generate lightweight, interactive business applications by describing desired outcomes, users, and data requirements through chat-based prompts.

In Copilot Cowork, users can utilize the built-in ‘/app’ skill to create app scaffolds and user interfaces automatically. These applications can leverage Microsoft 365 data sources, such as SharePoint, spreadsheets, and meetings, and allow for iterative refinements through conversation. The resulting apps are described as full-stack and built with open standards to facilitate integration.

Copilot Studio also offers app-building functionality in preview, enabling teams to combine interactive apps with conversational agents and process automation. For example, an onboarding solution could integrate a task-tracking app, an information-answering agent, and an automated workflow.

To support enterprise deployment, Microsoft has included governance features such as identity and access controls, centralized app inventories, and usage monitoring. The ‘/app’ skill is currently available through the Microsoft Frontier program, while Copilot Studio app-building is rolling out in public preview.
