Microsoft launches Windows memory‑footprint cut and AI‑powered performance analyzer

Microsoft announced a major optimization to reduce the memory footprint of Windows, targeting PCs equipped with only 8 GB of RAM. The change aims to deliver a smoother, more responsive experience on entry‑level laptops amid rising RAM prices and increased market share of modest‑spec machines.

In parallel, the company released a pre‑release of Windows Performance Analyzer (WPA MCP) that integrates GitHub Copilot. The tool lets developers query performance traces in natural language to identify the causes of slowdowns in Windows 11, such as problematic processes, drivers or I/O operations. The AI‑assisted diagnostics require an active Copilot subscription and currently support only that assistant.

Both initiatives respond to criticism of Windows 11’s perceived sluggishness and seek to improve stability and speed for a broad base of users.
