Microsoft recruits strategist to manage Xbox physical game supply
Microsoft has posted a job listing for a ‘Games Supply Strategist’ within the Xbox supply chain team, signaling a continued commitment to physical game distribution. The role involves coordinating the launch of physical Xbox games across all platforms, managing global supply strategies, and overseeing inventory and sales through various retail channels.
This development comes amid industry speculation regarding the future of physical media. While Sony has indicated plans to end physical disc production for PlayStation consoles starting in 2028, Microsoft’s recruitment efforts suggest it may maintain a presence in the retail market.
However, some analysts note that ‘physical’ does not strictly guarantee the continued use of optical discs. The role could also manage ‘code-in-a-box’ products, where physical packaging contains digital download codes rather than a disc. This would allow Microsoft to maintain retail shelf presence and cater to collectors without relying on disc-based hardware.
