Microsoft launches Xbox Labs to research AI in game development

Microsoft has announced the creation of Xbox Labs, a new initiative dedicated to researching the applications of artificial intelligence and other emerging technologies in video game development. The project was unveiled by Xbox CEO Asha Sharma, who noted the rapid rise in community-driven efforts to decompile, reconstruct, and port games to unsupported platforms or web browsers.

Led by CTO Scott Van Vliet, the initiative will consist of a small team of developers, engineers, and scientists. Their goal is to study these technological trends and transform experimental concepts into projects that can be tested by both studios and the public. Xbox Labs intends to operate in an open environment, sharing developed tools with the broader industry.

The move follows a trend where independent programmers use AI tools to enable classic titles to run on modern operating systems like Windows, macOS, and Linux, or to run directly in browsers. While Sharma acknowledged that these developments could disrupt existing business models, she emphasized the potential for revitalizing older games and empowering players to become co-creators. The company also stated its commitment to handling intellectual property and its surrounding communities responsibly.
