Sony adds warning stickers to PS5 boxes announcing end of physical game releases in 2028
Sony has begun affixing multilingual warning stickers to PlayStation 5 console boxes worldwide. The notice states that from January 2028 newly released games will be sold only in digital format via the PlayStation Store and retail partners, while discs for games released before that date will continue to work on the console.
Sony says the decision is final and will not be reversed. Chief Financial Officer Lin Tao told investors that the backlash has had no measurable impact on the business and that the company is forecasting a record year for its PlayStation division. Sony also indicated it will retain limited capacity to manufacture some older‑title discs after the cut‑off and is retraining staff at its Austrian Blu‑Ray plant.
Fans have organized a week‑long “blackout” protest from 23 to 30 August to voice opposition to the disc phase‑out.
