Sony adds warning stickers to PS5 boxes announcing end of new physical games in 2028

Sony Interactive Entertainment PlayStation 5 physical game discs 2028 warning stickers

Sony Interactive Entertainment has begun affixing warning stickers to PlayStation 5 packaging that state new game releases will be digital‑only from January 2028. The notice, posted in several languages, explains that discs for games released before that date will continue to work, but no new physical discs will be produced. Sony’s chief financial officer Lin Tao confirmed the decision during a recent earnings Q&A, saying the company sees no impact on its business and will continue to support existing disc titles.

The stickers appear on both disc‑drive and digital‑only PS5 boxes, as well as on separate disc‑drive accessories. Sony has started retraining staff at its Austrian Blu‑Ray plant in preparation for the shift. The move has sparked widespread backlash from gamers, prompting protests and petitions such as #PSBlackout, but Sony maintains that the digital transition is irreversible.

Legal challenges have also emerged, with antitrust lawsuits filed in the United States, United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Portugal and Mexico alleging that the disc‑phase‑out forces consumers to buy games exclusively through the PlayStation Store, where Sony takes a 30 % commission. Sony denies the claims, stating the change reflects market trends toward digital distribution.
