Microsoft optimizes Windows 11 memory usage for 8 GB RAM devices
Microsoft is implementing a comprehensive memory management overhaul for Windows 11 to address rising RAM costs and the high resource demands of modern AI services. The initiative, which was prioritized in mid-2026, aims to improve efficiency for devices with at least 8 GB of RAM.
Technical improvements focus on three main areas: implementing a more efficient memory allocator to reduce overhead for system components and third-party applications, fine-tuning the WinUI 3 framework for leaner interface performance, and optimizing Chromium and WebView2 web components. Microsoft is also working on better memory compression mechanisms and ensuring that system resources are loaded only when specific features are actively needed.
While some reports suggest that the Windows 11 26H2 update has already reduced memory usage by approximately 1.5 GB to 2 GB in certain scenarios, early feedback indicates that devices with only 8 GB of RAM may still experience significant pressure due to persistent background processes and resource-heavy AI integration.
