German chefs endorse egg‑peeling hack using salt and vinegar

Hard‑boiled eggs often leave a frustrating mess of cracked shells and stuck whites. German culinary experts have highlighted an online life‑hack that simplifies peeling. The method calls for adding exactly 12 g of salt and 15 ml of white vinegar to each litre of water before it reaches a boil, cooking the eggs for 10‑12 minutes and then transferring them immediately to ice water. The rapid cooling lets water seep between the shell and the inner membrane, allowing the shell to slip off cleanly.

The tip, circulated by HEIDELBERG24 and widely shared on social media, also has a chemical basis: the acidity of vinegar reacts with the calcium carbonate of the shell, weakening its bond to the membrane. Users report that the approach requires no special equipment and leaves the eggs’ flavor unchanged, making it a popular shortcut for home cooks across Germany.
