Microsoft Outlook password prompts cause login problems

Outlook may repeatedly ask for a password even when the correct credentials are entered. The issue often stems from outdated or incomplete account settings, cached credentials, two‑factor authentication requirements, or network factors such as VPNs and proxy servers. Users should first verify that they can log in to their email via a web browser; a successful web login indicates the problem lies with the Outlook client.

To resolve the prompt, check that the full email address is entered, Caps Lock is off, and the Windows date and time are correct. Temporarily disabling VPN or proxy, and trying a different network can help. If the web login fails, reset the password with the email provider. Within Outlook, use the account settings to repair or re‑authenticate the account, updating the password as needed. For accounts protected by two‑step verification, generate an app‑specific password in the provider’s security settings and use it in Outlook.
