Microsoft patents context-aware in-game advertising system
Microsoft has filed a patent application titled ‘Contextually Aware Management of Interactive Software Application Access’ for a system that integrates advertisements into PC and console gaming. The proposed technology aims to minimize disruption by using in-game data to identify natural breaks, such as loading screens, the end of a mission, completed quests, or the conclusion of a boss fight or cutscene.
The system utilizes a ‘credit’ model where players are granted an initial period of uninterrupted gameplay. As this credit expires, the software monitors the game state for a suitable pause point to display video, audio, or static promotional content. Once an advertisement is viewed, the player receives additional gameplay credits, which could range from 15 minutes to an hour, allowing them to continue playing without further interruptions.
While the patent suggests potential applications for Xbox, Windows, or cloud gaming services, Microsoft has not officially announced plans to implement this specific system. As with many patent filings, the technology may be intended for future development, licensing, or may never reach a commercial product.
