Microsoft patents system for non-intrusive video game advertising
Microsoft has filed a patent for a system designed to integrate advertisements into PC and console video games by identifying natural breaks in gameplay. The patent, titled ‘Contextually Aware Management of Interactive Software Application Access’, describes a technology that uses machine learning and game engine signals to detect optimal moments for promotional content.
Instead of interrupting active gameplay, the system aims to trigger ads during non-critical periods such as loading screens, menu navigation, the end of a mission, or after a boss fight. The proposed model includes an ‘add credit’ mechanism similar to mobile free-to-play games: players receive an initial period of ad-free gameplay based on time or in-game progress. Once this credit is exhausted, watching an advertisement would grant the player a new block of uninterrupted play.
While the patent suggests applications for PC, consoles, and cloud gaming, it does not confirm that Microsoft will implement this technology in Xbox services or specific titles. The filing represents an exploration of ad-supported gaming models rather than a definitive product announcement.
