Microsoft patents in-game ad system as CD Projekt RED adopts Xbox Play Anywhere

Microsoft has filed a patent for a system designed to manage contextually aware advertising within interactive software. The patent, titled ‘Contextually Aware Management of Interactive Software Application Access’, describes a method where machine learning or API signals analyze gameplay to determine optimal moments for advertisements, such as immediately after a player completes a level. The system could potentially pause user interaction to present audiovisual content and offer rewards, such as credits, that delay the next advertisement.

In separate gaming news, CD Projekt RED is integrating with Microsoft’s Xbox Play Anywhere program. Following the release of an enhanced version of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt on September 29, 2026, players who own the game on Xbox consoles will be able to play the upgraded version on PC at no additional cost via the Microsoft Store. The studio is also implementing the Xbox Disc to Digital feature, allowing players to convert physical console discs into digital licenses linked to their Microsoft accounts.
