Microsoft Pays More Than Stalker 2 Development Cost for Xbox Exclusive

Founder Sergiy Grygorovych of Ukraine's GSC Game World revealed that Microsoft paid a sum exceeding the game's development budget to secure a timed Xbox exclusivity for Stalker 2: Heart of Chernobyl. The payment, reportedly larger than the $70‑100 million estimated cost, allowed the studio to recover all expenses before the title’s release.

Stalker 2 launched on 20 November 2024 for Xbox Series X/S and PC, sold over three million copies within five months and attracted more than six million players. A year later it arrived on PlayStation 5 after the exclusivity period ended. The deal also placed the game on Xbox Game Pass from day one.

Subsequently, GSC Game World issued a statement contradicting Grygorovych’s claims, asserting that owner Max Krippa personally financed most of the development budget and that the founder was not involved in negotiations. Microsoft has not disclosed any figures. The controversy highlights the financial dynamics of console exclusivity and subscription services in the gaming industry.
