Microsoft phasing out Windows 10 support and legacy WMIC tool

Microsoft is phasing out several legacy components and support structures for its Windows operating systems. Following the end of official free security support for Windows 10 on October 14, 2025, users face increased cybersecurity risks. Many existing computers cannot officially upgrade to Windows 11 due to strict TPM 2.0 and CPU requirements, leading to suggestions of using lightweight Linux distributions like Linux Mint XFCE, Zorin OS Lite, MX Linux, antiX, and Lubuntu to extend hardware life.

Additionally, Microsoft has confirmed the complete removal of the Windows Management Instrumentation Command-line (WMIC) tool from Windows 11 version 26H2. A tool used by IT administrators since the Windows XP era, WMIC has been gradually deprecated in favor of PowerShell. It will no longer be available as an optional feature after August 2026.
