Microsoft plans Xbox backward compatibility and disc‑to‑digital licensing for future devices
A leaked internal Microsoft memo reveals two initiatives aimed at reviving the Xbox game library. One program would let players insert an Xbox One or Series disc to receive a digital license tied to their account, which could then be used on disc‑less hardware, including the upcoming Project Helix platform. The second program involves a native PC emulator that would run original Xbox and Xbox 360 titles on PCs, handhelds, and Helix, offering cloud saves and shared progress. Microsoft would handle emulator development, certification, storefront integration and ongoing support, while publishers would need to opt in on a title‑by‑title basis. Original Xbox games are slated to launch first, with Xbox 360 titles expected in 2027‑2028.
