Microsoft pledges $60 million to DOE’s Genesis Mission for AI and quantum research

Microsoft announced a $60 million investment to support the U.S. Department of Energy’s Genesis Mission, which links the agency’s 17 national laboratories, experimental facilities and data archives. The funding is divided into $40 million of Azure compute and AI credits to be delivered over three years and $20 million for solution‑engineering enablement services that will help researchers adopt advanced cloud, AI and quantum technologies.

To manage the partnership, Microsoft created the SPARK hub – Scientific Partnership Advancing Research & Knowledge – which serves as a single program office coordinating technical, security and compliance teams. SPARK will run an AI for Science Center of Excellence, provide architecture and deployment support, and integrate Microsoft’s FedRAMP‑authorized Azure infrastructure, Microsoft Foundry and Zero‑Trust security tools. The initiative aims to double the productivity and impact of American scientific research within a decade by embedding AI and quantum computing directly into scientific workflows across the DOE laboratory network.
