Microsoft Project Helix aims for high-spec AI hardware and five-generation compatibility

Microsoft’s next console, codenamed Project Helix, is reportedly designed with significant hardware and software ambitions. According to unofficial reports, the device may feature up to 48 GB of GDDR7 RAM and utilize AMD’s RDNA 5 architecture. This high memory capacity is intended to support local artificial intelligence features, such as a proposed ‘Game Assist’ system, which would run language models directly on the hardware to provide real-time assistance without relying solely on the cloud.

In terms of software, an internal memo suggests Project Helix aims for unprecedented backward compatibility, potentially spanning five generations of games: the original Xbox, Xbox 360, Xbox One, Xbox Series, and future Helix titles. While digital licenses for Xbox One and Series games would follow users to the new hardware, compatibility for original Xbox and 360 titles would require explicit, title-by-title permission from publishers, who would retain control over pricing and Game Pass availability.
