Microsoft Purview enhances data protection with quarantine and labeling

Microsoft Purview is expanding its data protection and compliance capabilities through new features and administrative tools.

A new quarantine action for SharePoint and OneDrive, available in public preview, allows IT administrators to implement more restrictive Data Loss Prevention (DLP) measures. When sensitive content is detected, the system moves the file from its original location to a secure, administrator-defined SharePoint site. This process removes all user permissions and sharing links, leaving only a placeholder text file at the original location to notify users of the action.

Additionally, Microsoft Purview enables the use of sensitivity labels to protect information. Within Microsoft 365 E5 environments, administrators can create custom labels that apply content markings such as watermarks, headers, or footers to documents. Once published via label policies, these settings synchronize across Office applications, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, to ensure consistent data protection across web and desktop platforms.
