Microsoft releases major Windows 11 update with 1,400+ security fixes

Microsoft has released a major update for Windows 11, headlined by the October 2026 Patch Tuesday, which addresses over 1,400 vulnerabilities. This represents a record-breaking volume of fixes, partly attributed to the increased use of AI in vulnerability research. Among the patched flaws, CVE-2026-96951, a command injection vulnerability in the Windows Shell, was noted as being actively exploited in the wild.

The update, specifically cumulative update KB5127648, is being integrated directly into the Windows 11 Media Creation Tool for x64 systems. It covers multiple versions, including 24H2, 25H2, and 26H2. Beyond security, the update introduces several functional improvements:

- Gaming: A redesigned Gaming Task View for Xbox mode on PC allows for easier navigation and quicker access to the desktop. - Security: Expanded passwordless sign-in capabilities using FIDO2 security keys and mobile passkeys. - Performance: Optimizations for File Explorer responsiveness and improved Bluetooth stability for audio devices. - Productivity: Enhanced PDF previewing in File Explorer and new customization options for the Copilot key.
