Microsoft releases Windows 11 26H2 annual update
Microsoft has begun the gradual rollout of Windows 11 version 26H2, the 2026 annual update. The update is delivered as a lightweight ‘enablement package’ rather than a full system reinstallation, as it shares the same codebase as versions 24H2 and 25H2. This allows for a rapid installation process that typically requires only a single restart.
Key features include deeper AI integration via Microsoft Copilot, with new capabilities in File Explorer for summarizing documents and AI-driven actions for images. The Task Manager has been updated to monitor NPU (Neural Processing Unit) usage, and the Start menu offers new layout and sizing options. Additionally, the taskbar can now be positioned at the top, left, or right of the screen.
While the update provides usability refinements, some known bugs have been reported, including audio issues with certain USB Audio Class 1.0 devices and potential login problems for users on Active Directory. The update also resets the official support lifecycle, providing 24 months of servicing for Home and Pro editions, and 36 months for Enterprise and Education editions.
