Microsoft releases Windows 11 update KB5124010 amid gaming stability issues
Microsoft has released the optional cumulative preview update KB5124010 for Windows 11 (versions 24H2 and 25H2). The update introduces several workflow refinements, including the ability to remap the physical Copilot key to function as a Right Ctrl or Context Menu key. Other features include new precision touchpad gestures, improved File Explorer functionality—such as enhanced preview panes for web-downloaded files and persistent folder states—and support for Emoji 17.0.
However, the update has caused stability issues for some users. Reports indicate that KB5124010 is triggering unexpected crashes in video games like Battlefield 6 and Battlefield 2042, with some players experiencing closures shortly after starting a match. Additionally, the update has been linked to bugs in the File History backup feature, causing incorrect error messages and timestamp issues. Microsoft has noted that the File History issue is addressed in the KB5124010 release.
In separate software news, Microsoft has announced it will retire three Microsoft 365 companion apps—People, Calendar, and Files—on December 16, 2026. While the apps will cease to function, users will need to manually remove them from their systems. Microsoft also plans to host a major event in San Francisco on October 7 to discuss the future of local AI and its impact on the PC ecosystem.
