Microsoft releases September 2026 Windows 11 updates

Microsoft has released its September 2026 Patch Tuesday updates, featuring the KB5124008 cumulative update for Windows 11 versions 24H2 and 25H2. This rollout is notably large, with nearly 1,000 total patches released across Microsoft software, a surge attributed to the use of specialized AI agents to identify vulnerabilities.

Key user interface improvements include the return of the ability to move the taskbar to the top, left, or right sides of the screen, along with a new compact mode to save screen real estate. The Start menu has also received enhanced customization options, allowing users to adjust its size and manage recently used items.

Other updates include fixes for mouse cursor customization, desktop background issues, and Arm64 app crashes. Additionally, newer preview builds (KB5124010) are introducing support for Emoji 17.0, the ability to remap the Copilot key, and improved File Explorer functionality.

However, the September updates have caused significant issues for Windows Server administrators. Reports indicate that the cumulative updates are causing Remote Desktop Services (RDS) failures on Windows Server 2019, 2022, and 2025, sometimes requiring hard resets to restore connectivity.
