Microsoft releases workaround for Exchange Server update failures
Microsoft has released an official workaround to address stability issues affecting Exchange Server environments following the October 13, 2026, Windows Server cumulative updates. The issues, which impact Exchange Server Subscription Edition, 2016, and 2019, often manifest several hours after installation, leading to failures in Outlook, OWA, and email transport.
Microsoft clarified that the Exchange security updates themselves are not the cause; rather, the problems stem from the Windows Server cumulative updates. Consequently, administrators are advised against uninstalling these security updates. The recommended fix involves setting the registry value ‘EpmapSavedContextCap’ to 65536 on the affected server, followed by a system restart.
This technical instability coincides with the end of the Extended Security Update (ESU) program for Exchange 2016 and 2019. Following the release of the final security updates on October 13, 2026, these versions will no longer receive official security patches, increasing the security risks for organizations that have not yet migrated to newer versions.
