Microsoft rolls out new privacy and feature updates for Windows 11

Microsoft is introducing several updates and fixes for Windows 11. A new privacy feature is being tested for Windows Insiders, allowing users to manage camera, microphone, and location access on an app-by-app basis for traditional desktop applications rather than using broad device-wide settings.

In File Explorer, Microsoft is restoring the ability to preview downloaded files via a new ‘Preview anyway’ button. This feature was previously disabled to prevent NTLM hash leakage risks associated with the Mark of the Web, but the new button allows users to bypass the block for trusted files without manual unblocking.

Security and system management updates include the removal of the requirement for a clean Windows installation to enable Smart App Control, which checks file reliability before execution. Additionally, users can utilize the Compact OS feature to compress system files, potentially saving several gigabytes of disk space with minimal performance impact.

Regarding stability, Microsoft has identified that certain RGB lighting software drivers are causing game crashes and Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) errors following a recent update. Troubleshooting guides are also available for common Windows 11 issues, such as the Microsoft Store failing to open or Windows Updates failing to download.
