Microsoft reorganizes Office and Teams divisions to prioritize AI

Microsoft is reducing management layers within its Office and Teams divisions to accelerate its strategic focus on artificial intelligence. Led by Charles Lamanna, who oversees Copilot and AI agents, the reorganization aims to create flatter hierarchies to enable faster decision-making and clearer responsibilities.

As part of this shift, several managers are transitioning into individual specialist roles without personnel responsibilities. The company is implementing a ratio of one manager for every twelve contributors. This restructuring is closely linked to changes in software development, where AI agents and agentic programming capabilities are fundamentally altering engineering functions. Engineers are increasingly tasked with designing and coordinating automated programming systems rather than writing every line of code manually.

This organizational change coincided with a technical disruption to the Azure cloud platform, which impacted various web services and gaming platforms.
