Microsoft reports Windows 11 audio bugs and end of support
Microsoft has confirmed that September 2026 security updates for Windows 11 may cause audio malfunctions on certain PCs. The issue specifically affects devices based on the USB Audio Class 1.0 standard. Users may experience a total loss of sound, volume controls stuck at zero, or error messages such as “This device cannot start (Code 10)” in the Device Manager. The problem is particularly prevalent in multi-channel audio configurations, such as 8-channel or 3D audio modes, though stereo mode may still function.
To address these issues, Microsoft has released hotfixes KB5129195 (for Windows 11 24H2/25H2) and KB5129194 (for 26H1), which resolve some malfunctions in 8-channel and 3D audio modes. However, total sound loss and Code 10 errors are not yet fully remediated. Users are advised to install the latest available updates via Windows Update and temporarily use two-channel stereo mode if necessary.
Separately, Microsoft announced that support for Windows 11 version 24H2 Home and Pro editions will end on October 13, 2026. After this date, these versions will no longer receive monthly security or non-security preview updates. While Enterprise and Education editions remain under mainstream support until October 2027, unmanaged consumer devices may be automatically prompted to update to version 25H2 to maintain compatibility.
