Microsoft restructures Xbox division, moves Halo to Activision

Microsoft is undergoing a major restructuring of its gaming division, resulting in 268 job cuts across Halo Studios, internal teams, and Xbox Game Studios management. The company reports that this reorganization is approximately 75 percent complete.

As part of the strategic shift, the development of the next mainline Halo title is being transferred to a newly formed, dedicated team within Activision. Halo Studios will transition into a smaller team focused on supporting existing titles and the community. Other significant studio movements include Rare and World’s Edge being placed under Activision leadership, while Obsidian Entertainment will move under Bethesda management to collaborate on future Fallout projects.

Additionally, Microsoft is merging Playground Games and Turn 10 Studios into a single unit to focus on the Forza and Fable series. The restructuring has also brought uncertainty to other studios; Microsoft is currently consulting employees regarding the potential closure of Ninja Theory following two failed sale attempts, and similar discussions are ongoing regarding the future of Arkane.
