Microsoft retracts 32 GB RAM recommendation for Windows 11 gaming PCs

Microsoft has removed a Windows Learning Center page that previously advised gamers to equip PCs with 32 GB of RAM for optimal performance, citing a global memory shortage. The guidance had positioned 16 GB as a practical baseline and 32 GB as ideal for demanding AAA titles or heavy mod use. The page is no longer reachable on the live site, though it can still be viewed via the Internet Archive.

The reversal reflects tight supplies of DDR4 and DDR5 modules caused by high demand from AI data‑center builds, prompting manufacturers to ship entry‑level gaming machines with as little as 8 GB of RAM. Microsoft also pledged to improve Windows 11 efficiency, noting that while the OS officially requires 4 GB, modern applications and web‑based components often consume far more. The company aims to reduce Windows 11’s resource footprint by the end of the year.
