Microsoft rolls out AI and security updates for Windows 11 and Edge

Microsoft is issuing an August 2026 security update for Windows 11 that lets users uninstall the built‑in AI image‑generation model, expands Advanced Windows Hello protection to external fingerprint sensors, and adds new touch‑pad gestures, among other enhancements to File Explorer, search, widgets and power settings. The rollout will be staged, so some features may appear after the initial installation.

Separately, the company is updating the Edge browser with a refreshed Copilot experience on the New Tab page. Starting with a preview in mid‑August and a broader release by mid‑September, the feature combines chat, web search and Microsoft 365 Copilot content in a single interface. It requires a Copilot licence, can be enabled by administrators, and adds voice, vision and other AI‑driven capabilities to both desktop and mobile versions of Edge.
