Microsoft releases Windows 11 update to disable Bing search

Microsoft has released the optional Windows 11 update KB5120998, which introduces significant changes to the system's search functionality. The update allows users to disable Bing web results and Microsoft Store suggestions, enabling a more streamlined, local-first search experience. By removing web-based clutter and promotional content, the search tool becomes faster and more focused on local files and applications.

Key features of the update include improved typo tolerance, clearer identification of search result types (such as apps, files, or settings), and a redesigned search interface. Additionally, the update offers taskbar customization, such as the ability to move the taskbar to different screen positions, and new Start menu scaling options.

Because Microsoft uses a Controlled Feature Rollout, these changes may not appear immediately for all users even after installing the update. Users can attempt to manually force these features using the open-source tool ViVeTool. Some users have reported minor bugs following the update, including issues with mouse cursor settings and wallpaper displays.
