Microsoft rolls out Windows 11 26H2 update amid technical issues
Microsoft has begun rolling out the Windows 11 26H2 update, which serves primarily as an enablement package to activate features previously staged in earlier versions. For many users, this update is a small download that extends the support lifecycle for their devices. For example, upgrading to 26H2 extends support for Home and Pro editions until October 2028.
However, the rollout has been accompanied by technical issues. An optional update, KB5124010, has been identified as causing crashes in applications and games that rely on the system's built-in AC-3 (Dolby Digital) audio decoding. This bug affects versions 24H2, 25H2, and 26H2 due to a shared codebase. Additionally, some users have reported GDI object leaks in Task Manager and installation errors via Windows Update.
Microsoft is also transitioning users from version 24H2. For private Home and Pro users, upgrading to version 25H2 is becoming mandatory as security updates for 24H2 are scheduled to end on October 13, 2026. Meanwhile, Insider Program participants are testing new features, such as the ability to move the taskbar to different screen edges and improved accessibility tools.
