Microsoft rolls out Windows 11 August 2026 security update with Enhanced Sign‑in Security
Microsoft has released the Windows 11 August 2026 security update for versions 25H2 and 24H2. The patch adds a range of refinements, including UI tweaks such as file‑explorer size units, removal of a gray‑flash effect, and improved search handling of typos and short queries. It also introduces the option to uninstall the image‑generation AI model on Copilot+‑enabled devices.
A key security addition is Windows Hello Enhanced Sign‑in Security (ESS), which now supports compatible external fingerprint readers. ESS builds on the existing Windows Hello architecture by moving biometric processing into isolated, hardware environments, keeping credential data on the device and strengthening protection against attacks. The feature offers the same sign‑in experience as standard Windows Hello while adding an extra layer of trust for users without built‑in biometric sensors.
