Microsoft signals end of Internet Explorer mode support
Microsoft has informed IT administrators that Internet Explorer mode in the Microsoft Edge browser will not be supported indefinitely. While the company previously retired the standalone Internet Explorer desktop application, IE mode was maintained to allow access to legacy websites and government portals that require older technology.
Microsoft stated in the Microsoft 365 Message Center that IE mode is supported through at least the end of 2029. The company is urging businesses and governments to begin planning migrations for legacy applications and websites to avoid future disruptions. Microsoft noted that application modernization projects can take years to complete due to complex dependencies.
Once a final end-of-life date for IE mode is determined, Microsoft intends to provide at least one year of notice. This follows security concerns, including instances in 2024 where hackers exploited IE mode through malicious pop-up advertisements.
