Microsoft tests native speed test tool in Windows 11
Microsoft is testing a native network speed test tool within the Windows 11 Insider experimental preview build 26340.9767. This update replaces the previous method, which redirected users to a Bing web page to use Ookla’s speed test tool.
The new feature allows users to launch the test directly from the Quick Settings panel or by right-clicking the Wi-Fi icon in the taskbar. While the underlying engine remains Ookla’s Speedtest, the results now appear within a native interface rather than an independent browser window. The tool measures ping, download speed, and upload speed, and it continues to run in the background even if the user clicks outside the panel.
Additionally, Microsoft is testing improvements to the Windows 11 Xbox mode. A new navigation bar in the Gaming Task View allows users to exit to the desktop or access power options—such as sleep, sign out, shutdown, and restart—using only a game controller, eliminating the need for a physical keyboard.
