Microsoft to allow remapping of Copilot key on Windows 11

Microsoft is preparing to allow users to reconfigure the Copilot key on Windows 11 keyboards. Originally introduced in early 2024 as a major hardware change to represent the AI PC era, the dedicated key was intended to provide instant access to the AI assistant.

However, the replacement of traditional keys—such as the right Ctrl or context menu key—has caused difficulties for users accustomed to old shortcuts and those using assistive technologies like screen readers. In recent Windows 11 Release Preview builds (26100.9539 and 26200.9539), Microsoft has added a setting under 'Bluetooth & devices > Keyboard' that allows the Copilot key to function as a traditional right Ctrl or context menu key. This update is being rolled out in stages to maintain familiar workflows and accessibility standards.
