Microsoft to launch Maia 300 AI chip to reduce Nvidia reliance
Microsoft is preparing to launch its next-generation AI accelerator, the Maia 300, as early as September 2026. This strategic move is designed to reduce the company's reliance on high-cost processors from Nvidia and to optimize its Azure cloud infrastructure for large-scale AI workloads.
To support this rollout, Microsoft is in negotiations with TSMC to secure manufacturing capacity for over 300,000 units, with deliveries expected in 2027. The company has expressed a long-term goal of securing capacity for more than 1 million Maia 300 chips. The new chip is expected to offer approximately 30% better performance per dollar compared to existing hardware.
Microsoft is also working to expand the adoption of its custom silicon by persuading major cloud customers, such as Anthropic, to utilize the Maia series. This follows the release of the Maia 200, which was built using TSMC's 3-nanometer technology and focused primarily on inference tasks.
