Microsoft to end Internet Explorer compatibility mode in 2029
Microsoft has confirmed that it will eliminate Internet Explorer compatibility mode by the end of 2029. This move will remove the final functional link to the legacy browser within Microsoft Edge.
Currently, the IE compatibility mode allows the Chromium-based Microsoft Edge to load older web pages using the Trident engine, which powered Internet Explorer 11. This feature has been vital for many corporations and government entities that rely on internal intranets and management applications built on outdated technologies.
Updating this digital infrastructure often requires significant investment and long development cycles, leading many organizations to rely on the compatibility mode to maintain operations. Microsoft communicated this deadline through the Microsoft 365 admin center and plans to send a new end-of-support notice one year prior to the final shutdown. System administrators are advised to begin planning migrations now, as the transition process can take several years.
