Microsoft to cap Xbox Cloud Gaming hours for Game Pass subscribers

Microsoft is ending unlimited cloud gaming for Xbox Game Pass subscribers, introducing monthly usage caps starting in November. The company stated that the decision is driven by the rising costs of providing cloud infrastructure as more users play for longer periods.

The new monthly limits are tiered based on subscription levels:

• Game Pass Ultimate: 15 hours • Game Pass Premium: 10 hours • Game Pass Essential: 5 hours

Microsoft estimates that these changes will impact approximately 4% of Game Pass subscribers, specifically those who use cloud gaming most intensively. To accommodate users who exceed their limits, Microsoft will allow the purchase of additional playtime hours through the Xbox Store.

Additionally, Microsoft is introducing a new option that allows players to purchase cloud gaming hours directly via the Xbox Store without a recurring Game Pass subscription. This pay-as-you-go model is intended to provide access for occasional players or those in markets where hardware is less affordable. Pricing and specific details for these additional hours are expected to be released in November.
