Microsoft to implement monthly time limits for Xbox Cloud Gaming
Microsoft is introducing monthly usage limits for Xbox Cloud Gaming starting in November 2026. The new policy replaces the previous unlimited streaming model with tiered monthly allowances based on subscription levels: Game Pass Ultimate members will receive 15 hours, Premium members 10 hours, and Essential members 5 hours. Once these limits are reached, users can purchase additional time through the Xbox Store.
Microsoft attributes the decision to rising infrastructure costs. Reports suggest the 15-hour limit for Ultimate subscribers aligns with the service's break-even point, as usage beyond that threshold becomes unprofitable. The shift is also linked to the high demand for Azure server capacity, which is increasingly being prioritized for artificial intelligence workloads.
While the changes are expected to affect approximately 4% of subscribers, Microsoft has indicated that existing subscribers in certain markets—including Brazil, Australia, Germany, and France—may be grandfathered into their current unlimited terms as long as they maintain an active, auto-renewing subscription. These limits apply strictly to cloud streaming; local game installations and native gameplay on consoles or PCs remain unaffected.
