Microsoft updates Windows 11 with new context menu and privacy controls

Microsoft is rolling out several significant updates to Windows 11, primarily focused on user interface performance and privacy controls. A major overhaul of the File Explorer right-click context menu is being tested in Insider builds. This redesign aims to address user complaints regarding sluggishness and clutter caused by third-party app integrations. The new 'Customize menu' feature will allow users to toggle eight core actions, such as 'Print' and 'Send to', and provides the option to return primary commands like 'Copy' and 'Paste' to a classic vertical text list, similar to Windows 10.

In terms of privacy, Microsoft is introducing granular permission controls for Win32 desktop applications. Unlike the current system where permissions are often managed globally, the new update allows users to individually enable or disable access to the camera, microphone, and location for specific desktop programs. This brings the desktop experience closer to the permission models used in mobile operating systems.

Additionally, the Windows 11 Task Manager is being updated to support AI-driven hardware monitoring. New columns will allow users to track NPU (Neural Processing Unit) usage, including dedicated and shared memory, as well as GPU neural engine activity. Other interface improvements include the modernization of the File Properties window using the WinUI 3 framework to ensure visual consistency across the operating system.
