Microsoft to discontinue Excel COPILOT() function in 2026

Microsoft has announced it will discontinue the experimental =COPILOT() function in Excel on September 14, 2026. The feature, which allowed users to use natural language directly within spreadsheet cells to summarize text, classify data, or retrieve web information, is being retired after approximately one year of testing for Insider and Frontier program users.

The company stated the decision is part of a strategic effort to simplify the user experience and reduce redundancy. Microsoft noted that the capabilities provided by the formula are already available through the Copilot side pane and the Dynamic Action Button (DAB). By consolidating these tools, Microsoft aims to provide a more unified interface for its AI assistant.

While the specific formula is being removed, the underlying AI capabilities in Excel will remain. Users are encouraged to transition to the Copilot side pane or the ‘Edit with Copilot’ mode for interacting with workbooks. Additionally, Microsoft is addressing user feedback regarding the placement of Copilot buttons in Word, Excel, and PowerPoint by allowing users to move floating buttons into the ribbon via a right-click option.
