Microsoft unveils mixed exclusivity and cross‑platform strategy for next Xbox console

Microsoft announced at the Summer Games Fest on June 10, 2026 that its upcoming Xbox console will follow a hybrid strategy that blends selective exclusivity with broad multiplatform releases. Two new titles – Gears of War Eday and Clockwork Revolution – will be exclusive to Xbox consoles and Windows PCs, reinforcing the company’s own ecosystem while still allowing cross‑device play within that environment.

Major live‑service games such as Call of Duty, Overwatch and Diablo will continue to be available on Xbox, PlayStation, PC and other platforms, maintaining existing developer agreements. Microsoft also highlighted its Game Pass streaming service and a rent‑to‑own model to mitigate hardware shortages and lower entry costs for players.

The announcement referenced the practical differences between Xbox’s integrated store and the Steam platform, noting that cross‑progression and game ownership remain developer‑controlled. While Xbox games purchased via the Microsoft Store can be played on both console and Windows PC, Steam purchases do not grant Xbox access, underscoring the distinct ecosystems.

Overall, the plan aims to expand Microsoft’s audience, sustain support for current hardware, and provide flexible, affordable gaming options amid supply‑chain challenges.
