Microsoft unveils Project Zenith for local AI development and new digital safety features

Microsoft has introduced Project Zenith, a Windows 11-based environment specifically designed for AI application and system developers. The platform aims to provide a “ready-to-code” system by pre-configuring necessary tools, runtimes, and settings, thereby reducing the setup time typically required for new development PCs.

A core feature of Project Zenith is the ability to run large AI models locally rather than relying continuously on cloud infrastructure. Designed for hardware with at least 64 GB of unified memory and memory bandwidth of 250 GB/s or higher, the system can execute models with over 30 billion parameters directly on the computer. This hybrid approach allows repetitive tasks, assisted coding, and standard development workflows to be handled locally, while more advanced tasks remain in the cloud. The initial hardware platform for Zenith will be AMD Ryzen AI Halo, with future support planned for other OEM partners and semiconductor manufacturers.

Additionally, Microsoft is enhancing Windows 11 with new digital safety features to protect minors. Through a new family of APIs called Digital Safety Age Signals, the operating system will communicate a user's age group to applications without revealing exact birth dates or specific ages. This allows apps to restrict inappropriate content while minimizing the amount of personal data collected from users. This initiative aligns with increasing global regulatory requirements regarding child safety online.
